- 5.2.1.1 Fundamentals and Damage Mechanisms
- 5.2.1.2 Intake of Foreign Objects
- 5.2.1.3 Foreign Object Types
- 5.2.1.4 Measures Against Foreign Object Damage

This chapter deals with damage caused by the impact of large, hard bodies or foreign objects of technical origin (plastic sheeting, cleaning rags, etc.). It covers both the ingestion of external foreign objects and internal foreign objects (engine parts or fragments).
The FOD described in this chapter is primarily caused by mechanical overstressing of engine parts, which can have many different damage mechanisms.
There is a special focus on the possibility of foreign objects being sucked into the engine, since an understanding of this process is a prerequisite for effective prevention of foreign objects entering the engine.
