16.2.1 Process-Specific Problems and Damages

This chapter focuses on process-specific problems and damages, as well as their effects and solutions. In the following, process-specific problems are those that occur during specific finishing processes. A sufficient amount of technical literature is available on the market that describes the processes and their variations, uses, and parameters. A selection of this literature is given on page 16.2.1.1-2. This literature does not usually place primary importance on problems and their resulting operating damages. Also, literature that treats damages in a more general sense does not usually sufficiently treat process issues from the point of view of damage causes. This assessment also applies to case studies and collections that describe various damages.
Therefore, in this chapter, the focus is on describing the mechanisms and factors that lead to damages in the respective finishing processes, as well as their effects on the operating behavior of the parts. This includes suggestions for corrective measures. The finishing processes under discussion are frequently used in engine finishing. Naturally, many of the flaws and their causes are also discussed in other parts of this volume, in which case they are noted with cross-references to diagrams in other chapters.
